“Treasure Hunt”

When I was doing research for my novel “Woman Of A Thousand Secrets” I came across a fascinating legend of buried treasure.
When Hernando Cortez arrived in Mexico in the year 1519, he came with one goal in mind: to find gold. During their initial months in the New World, his men seized all the gold they could lay their hands on, stripped the Aztec temples, seized all the jewelry and religious objects they could find, and even forced the Indians to labor in gold mines, sending ingots back to King Carlos of Spain (much of the gold being lost at sea because the ships were too heavy to ride out storms). When the Aztec emperor Montezuma realized that the Spaniards were beginning a march toward his city of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City), he ordered all the gold, silver and jewels to be amassed and sent north in a secret caravan, with orders that it was all to be buried until the Spaniards had left. However, the Spaniards never left, and Montezuma died with his secret. To this day, that treasure has never been found.

So, where is it, you ask?

One early historical account tells us that the caravan traveled 275 leagues north from Mexico City, then turned west into mountains. There, in a deep cave in a canyon, the treasure was stowed. Although no one is certain how long a "league" was, consensus is that the treasure ended up somewhere in California's Sierra Madres (although other accounts have the treasure buried in Arizona, New Mexico or Utah - a rather large area to explore!)

One popular belief is that Montezuma's treasure is hidden in the canyons of southern Utah. In 1917, a man named Freddie Crystal claimed to be in possession of a book written by Montezuma himself, in which an inventory of the treasure and a map to the hiding place were recorded in cryptic symbols. Freddie took a team of pack horses into a canyon on White Mountain and found, carved into the cliffs, symbols matching those in Montezuma's book. Crystal and the local citizens reportedly went into those caves with the zeal of Spanish conquistadors, but came up with nothing, their treasure hunt abandoned.

For anyone who is interested, White Mountain is located near Kanab, Utah (north of the Grand Canyon) and those mysterious symbols are still there, carved into the rocks. If you do go with pick axe and shovel (and a few mules) and if you happen to find Montezuma's treasure, please remember that you first heard about it from me.
